The family of a young boy who was murdered is agonizing over his killer being released from prison for a second time.

The family of Logan Tipton was left stunned when Ronald Exantus, 42, was released from a Kentucky prison on Wednesday after serving over half of his sentence.

Exantus served nearly 11 years in prison in connection with the attack that killed the 6-year-old.

In 2015, Exantus attacked Tipton as he was peacefully asleep in his room in Versailles, Kentucky, stabbing the 6-year-old in the head with a knife, and then attacked the boy’s father and sisters, who survived.

Exantus, a former dialysis nurse, got access to the home through an unlocked door on December 7, 2015.

Exantus attacked the family with a large kitchen knife, repeatedly stabbing Logan in the head so brutally that the butcher’s knife bent. Exantus later admitted to officers that he had stabbed and killed the child.

Exantus was found not guilty by reason of insanity due to his schizophrenia diagnosis over the murder, but he was sentenced to prison for the assaults on the Tipton family.

He was initially released from prison in October 2025 due to Kentucky’s mandatory reentry supervision laws, even though Tipton’s family and the parole board protested.

Twelve days after he was released, he was re-arrested in Florida due to a failure in his requirement to register as a convicted felon, and went back to jail.

His second release occured after his sentence expired, and he is not under any requirement to go to a psychiatric hospital.

Logan’s family said they were at their “breaking point” due to the fact that the boy’s killer is a free man.

“Knowing that this monster gets to walk free and live his life, while I lay in this bed and my baby boy is in the grave. This may be my breaking point,” Logan’s father, Dean, said to the Daily Mail.

Logan’s family was enraged that Exantus was released from prison, saying that he was given a “slap on a wrist,” while a “life sentence” was given to their family Dean said.

Exantus was eligible for parole in 2019 because of credit for time served, but was denied in 2021 and deferred in 2023 for two years before he was initially released last year. His maximum release date was set for 2035, but he received nine years of sentence credit for completing certain programs, the news outlet reported.

Exantus’s attorney said he’s been receiving mental health treatment.

Following Logan’s murder, Dean and his relatives were able to successfully invoke changes to the way cases like Exantus’s would be handled.

Logan’s Law strengthens sentencing and parole for violent offenders and introduces stricter mental health evaluations prior to any release.
