A high school principal and a 10-year-old child were killed after a car and a UTV collided in Iowa.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a crash involving a car and a UTV at the intersection of East Worthington Road and Comer Road at around 9:21 p.m. local time, according to local outlets KCRG, KWWL and WHO 13.

Upon arrival, first responders helped transport six seriously injured individuals, the principal among them, to a nearby hospital. A 10-year-old child was declared dead at the scene.

The following day, police identified the principal as 33-year-old Joshua Tack. He later died from his injuries at the hospital.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Josh Tack, Jr/Sr High School Principal, passed away from injuries sustained in an accident this weekend,” the BCLUW Community School District wrote in a social media statement. “Please keep his wife Blake, their children and family, along with the entire BCLUW Community, in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

According to WHO 13, Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy said that Tack was traveling northbound in a UTV on Saturday night with five other passengers in the vehicle. The UTV was allegedly crossing the intersection when it was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

After the crash, Kennedy said that two passengers were airlifted to an Iowa City hospital while two others were taken to a local hospital for various injuries.

While the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital, two people — Tack and the 10-year-old child — ultimately died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Kennedy also told the outlet that the crash remains under investigation.
