Florida mom arrested after lighting fire in kitchen, dousing daughters in hot wax

A 26-year-old Miami mother faces multiple felony charges after authorities say she set fire to a pile of clothes in her kitchen and poured hot candle wax onto her two young daughters.

Meliza Campos-Sanchez was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Institution on Monday, Aug. 17. She is charged with first-degree arson, child abuse, and two counts of child neglect, according to arrest affidavits.

The case began on Aug. 16 when Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a reported kitchen blaze at the residence. A fire investigator concluded the fire had been set intentionally using combustible materials, an open flame, and ignitable liquids.

The scene showed charred items and minor burn damage to the center of the tiled kitchen floor.

Investigators soon discovered two videos posted to Campos-Sanchez’s Instagram account. In one recording, she wore a silver mask while spraying a liquid onto clothing on the floor and igniting it with a red lighter. In the second video, she poured melted wax from lit candles onto her own leg and onto her daughters’ hands.

Police later recovered and photographed a silver mask, a red lighter, and a plastic bottle containing a clear liquid believed to be rubbing alcohol.

The suspect’s husband, Yusniel Cue, told detectives he had been staying at his parents’ house for about a week due to marital difficulties. Cue said a friend alerted him to the online videos and told him to call the police. By the time Cue arrived at the house, deputies and fire crews were already there. He took custody of the children while Campos-Sanchez was transported to an area hospital. Cue also told investigators about a prior suicide attempt by his wife and noted he had contacted the sheriff’s office the previous week over concerns for their daughters.

The couple’s eldest daughter told investigators that she and her younger sister watched from the adjacent laundry room as their mother set the clothes on fire, threw a glass mug to the floor, and danced. The girl said her mother extinguished the fire with a bowl of water before bringing both children into the kitchen to pour hot candle wax on them.

Campos-Sanchez was initially sedated at the hospital and was unable to give a statement before being formally charged and booked.
