Behind the polished on-camera appearance of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is a makeup artist who says the job changed how she sees politics and the people who work in it.

Brittany Danielle, who has done Leavitt’s hair and makeup since her Fox News days, says the biggest surprise of the job wasn’t the fame or the pressure. It was seeing how hard people work when no one is watching.

“Regardless of whatever someone’s political views are, when you see the people tirelessly working behind the scenes for what they believe is best for the interest of the country, it really changes your mindset,” Danielle told IW Features. Danielle, who has worked in bridal and other cosmetology fields, told IW Features in a recent interview that political makeup work stood out for a different reason. While she works with the Press Secretary, she also does makeup for various Fox News personalities, like Lara Trump.

“I liked that arena more, the political field,” she said. “Not because I’m into politics, but I liked the professionalism of the job.” She said the job gave her rare access to public figures away from cameras and headlines.

“I started working at Fox News … I could meet so many different people and see their personalities offscreen,” Danielle said, adding that seeing the “real people” behind the news made her appreciate the work more than the coverage suggested.

Danielle first worked with Leavitt during one of her early-morning appearances as press secretary, when she was the only makeup artist on set. She now works out of the White House some days and travels with Leavitt to studios and events on others, often on a schedule that changes by the minute.

“I know that [Leavitt’s] got two meetings coming up, and I’ll have enough time to blow-dry half of her hair and then set up my makeup,” Danielle said. “We will literally work where I will only have one of her eyes done, and she has to go to a meeting.”

She described doing Leavitt’s hair and makeup while the press secretary reviewed files, took calls, and ran meetings around her.

“She’s looking at files, she’s reading stuff, she’s on her phone, she’s in a meeting, she’s got 10 people in her office,” Danielle said. “And I’m sitting there doing her hair and makeup.”

Despite staying out of the spotlight herself, Danielle said she has faced backlash for her association with the administration, including online threats. She said she has since made her social media accounts private and tries not to dwell on the criticism.

“People talk so much trash, and they don’t know the situation,” she said. “A lot of times they’re attacking not the makeup artist, but they’re attacking the politician, and you just happen to get wrapped up in it.”

Still, Danielle said watching the daily work inside the White House has left a lasting impression on her. “It made me find some new love for my country, too,” she said. “It woke up this patriotic spirit inside of me.”
