Taylor Swift is navigating one of the “toughest” parts of her friendship fallout with Blake Lively after the pair stopped speaking amid Lively’s lawsuit with It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni.

Swift allegedly felt she had “no choice” but to back away from Lively after her name was dragged into the actress’s legal issues with Baldoni, according to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail. Still, there is one part of their friendship that Swift is reportedly missing more than others: her role as godparent to Blake’s daughters with husband Ryan Reynolds.

“It was one of the toughest decisions she’s ever had to make,” said a source close to Swift told the Daily Mail of the singer’s decision to walk away from her relationship with James, 11, Inez, nine, and Betty, six. “It was very emotional because she loves the girls. It hurt her heart, but she had no choice given the circumstances.”

The source alleges that Swift decided things “a few months ago” after talking it over with now-husband Travis Kelce, 36, who affirmed it “was the right thing to do.”

Swift’s close bond with Lively’s daughters has been evident for years, including when she name-dropped the three girls in her 2020 album, Folklore. Swift didn’t officially announce she was their godmother until July 2024 when she promoted Reynolds’ movie Deadpool & Wolverine on Instagram.

“Shout out to Wade Wilson, aka my godkids’ sperm donor,” she wrote in the caption, referencing Reynolds’ onscreen character’s name.

In November of that year, Reynolds confirmed to Deadline that Swift was godmother to his daughters, but not to his and Lively’s son, Olin, who was born in 2023.

Daily Mail’s source now says, “There was never an agreement in writing about her being the girls’ godmother,” adding that “it was a verbal one between Taylor and Blake.” But that hasn’t softened the blow for Swift. “It hurt her heart, but she had no choice given the circumstances,” the source said. “She wanted to make a clean and total break.”

The source said that while Swift is “having the time of her life” right now after marrying Kelce on July 3, “The only thing that is causing troubles in her life is Blake’s kids and not having the relationship she would like to have with them as their godmother.”

“Right now, she doesn’t feel it’s healthy or realistic to maintain a close relationship with the children while having virtually no relationship with their parents,” the source said. “She believes stepping away is the most respectful path forward for all parties.”

Swift and Lively’s friendship fell apart when text exchanges between the friends were included in legal filings related to Lively and Baldoni’s battle. This led to attempts to subpoena Swift as a witness, which were unsuccessful.
