Woman enjoys weekend with boyfriend, note on flight home changes everything
A woman thought her boyfriend meeting her parents went perfectly—until she was handed a note from a stranger.
The woman, who didn’t give her name but who posts to Reddit under the username hellodollyyyx0, was dating her boyfriend for almost a year, after meeting him soon after she moved to a new state.

At first, everything was great—she described him as “sweet and thoughtful the entire time,” they had the same sense of humor and had the same goals, and they planned to move in together.
Recently, the woman flew to visit her family and introduce her boyfriend, and the weekend went perfectly. She even told her friends that it had gone “better than I could have imagined.”
The problem started, however, when the couple were on the plane back home.
She wrote to the GirlDinnerDiaries sub that, on the flight back, it was like “a switch flipped” in her boyfriend and he began treating her badly and “talking down to me.”
At one point, he got up to use the bathroom “without saying anything to me or the woman sitting next to me and pushed his way past” them both, with the woman ending up apologizing to her.
“I said to the woman ‘I’m so sorry, that was incredibly rude, I don’t know what’s gotten into him’ and she kindly assured me it wasn’t a big deal.”
Her boyfriend continued talking down to her for the flight, and when they landed and were gathering their bags, the woman suddenly handed her a “tiny, folded up note.”
When she opened it, it gave the woman’s name and phone number, and read: “I’ve been you before. You are not responsible for his behavior. You deserve better. If you need help, call me.”
The poster said she “immediately broke into tears,” admitting that if it wasn’t for this, “I probably would have forgave his behavior.”
But now, he said, “I am breaking up with him tonight.”
Domestic abuse comes in many forms. A report from the Office on Women’s Health states that people may not think they are being abused if it is not physical, but emotional and verbal abuse can have long-lasting effects on a person’s mental health, that can be just as serious as physical abuse.
Emotional or verbal abuse can include humiliating a person in front of others and calling a person insulting names. It can begin suddenly, with an abuser starting out by behaving normally but beginning abuse after a relationship is established.
The woman’s post shocked readers, who awarded it more than 77,000 upvotes, as one commenter warned: “Believe them when they show you their true colors. Dump him.”
“I’m really glad that lady saw you and I am really glad you are listening to her,” another said. “Best of luck, bb girl. Get safe.”
And as another put it: “We love a girl’s girl. She’s right, you deserve better.”
