Elon Musk issues new warning to Delta over Starlink decision
Back in May, Elon Musk spoke out against Delta Air Lines after the carrier publicly announced that it would not be partnering with Musk’s company, SpaceX, to utilize its Starlink satellite internet platform. Now, Musk is speaking out again.
In a new post, Musk commented on some customers suggesting that they were choosing United Airlines over Delta due to the partnership with Starlink, warning that “it will get much worse” for Delta after its decision.
Delta Does Not Move Forward With Starlink
Earlier this year, Delta Air Lines declined to partner with Starlink and instead chose to partner with the competition, Amazon’s LEO service.
Back in May, early SpaceX and xAI investor Ron Baron revealed during an inteview that Delta’s decision to pass on the Starlink deal ultimately came down to branding.
Baron said that Delta insisted Starlink access would sit behind Delta’s branded portal rather than Starlink’s. Essentially, Delta wanted to offer “Delta Sync” to its passengers through its own app rather than Starlink, leading to the deal falling through.
Musk offered his take on the deal back in May, claiming that SpaceX requires Starlink WiFi to work just like it would if a user was at their own home, not through a portal.
“Not exactly. SpaceX requires that there be no annoying ‘portal’ to use Starlink,” Musk wrote in a post on X. “Starlink WiFi must just work effortlessly every time, as though you were at home.”
“Delta wanted to make it painful, difficult and expensive for their customers. Hard to see how that is a winning strategy,” Musk added in his post.
However, Delta CEO Ed Bastian told Bloomberg that the airline chose Amazon Leo thanks to an “improved bandwidth with a much lower price point than what we’ve ever seen from Starlink.”
The significant downside to Delta’s decision to partner with Amazon’s LEO service instead of Starlink is that LEO will not be able to offer connectivity until 2028, putting Delta years behind competitors United, American, Southwest, Hawaiian, and Alaska, who have all partnered with Starlink.
Musk Issues New Warning
This week, an X aggregator account shared a compilation of a few posts from users complaining about Delta’s decision, claiming that they were willing to book United over Delta because of United’s partnership with Starlink.
Musk chimed in with a post on his own.
“I warned them. It will get much worse,” Musk wrote in a post on X.
While there is no evidence to suggest that customers eschewing Delta for other airlines with Starlink is widespread, Business Insider points out that SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said during its recent earnings that one airline had reported that some customers were choosing unnecessary layovers to ensure they were on a flight with Starlink.
