Scottie Scheffler’s wife wanted to cry after the her husband showed true class toward his singles competitor, Nico Echavarria, at the Presidents Cup on Sunday.

World No. 1 Scheffler conceded a 32-foot par putt on the 14th hole to his opponent after the International member heard yelling in his back swing, and it didn’t sit right with Scheffler. When a fan shouted during the Colombian player’s backswing at the hole, Echavarria dropped his club in frustration as his tee shot sliced far to the right. Displeased by the distraction, Scheffler confronted the individual directly, emphasizing that such behavior had no place at the tournament.

Scheffler was in disbelief and walked across the tee box to confront the fan. At the end of the hole, the Ryder Cup star made sure that the fan moment didn’t impact Echavarria’s score. When Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, found out about the concession, she was almost brought to tears. “’That makes me want to cry,” she said, according to NBC’s John Wood. As much as the moment made Scheffler’s wife want to cry, it made her husband angry.

“There’s just no place for that,” said Scheffler regarding the yells. “I was very frustrated. It was honestly a big distraction, I think for me, just because we compete and work so hard to put ourselves in these moments. When you have some fan who decides to insert himself into the tournament, you can say, I think, whatever you want to players, but I think there’s an amount of respect there.

“You should get about 30 seconds when you’re over the ball and hitting your shot or getting ready for your shot where fans are pretty silent.”

Echavarria said it happened more than what the broadcast showed. “It didn’t happen just once,” said Echavarria. “It was a tough environment. It’s unfortunate that in some way the crowds can affect performance like that. But we have the No. 1 player in the world who’s a class act. I wasn’t expecting for him to give me that putt for par, and he did, and we tied the hole. It was just unfortunate, a couple things here and there.”

Scheffler continued as the fans in Chicago gained more momentum and excitement as the week went on.

“It just didn’t really sit well with me,” said Scheffler. “He would never hit a shot as poorly as he hit, I think, off the 14th if there wasn’t a fan yelling in his swing. It was just very frustrating. I don’t really want to talk about it all that much. It was frustrating.”

It comes as Trump was hit with a mortifying 2-word heckle as he arrived at Medinah.
