A Kentucky woman who admitted to shooting her mother to death has been sentenced to prison.

Brianna Rich, 27, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to murder last month. On the night of March 14, 2025, Brianna Rich called 911 and told dispatchers that she shot her mother, 50-year-old Carol Rich, about five times after they had a physical altercation at their London, Kentucky, home. When dispatchers asked Brianna Rich what happened, the younger woman said her mother “came at me. Trying to hurt me and choke me. It’s been going on for a while now. I haven’t been able to go out of the house.”

According to reporting on the 911 call by local Fox affiliate WDKY, Brianna Rich was trying to help her mother after the shooting, telling dispatchers, “I’m holding blankets on her wounds, and she don’t have a pulse. There’s a lot of blood.”

After dispatchers told Brianna Rich that police were outside her home, a Laurel County deputy was heard telling her to get on the ground. Carol Rich was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local CBS affiliate WKYT spoke to Brianna Rich’s sisters, Brittney Rich and Bridgett Rich, after the arrest. They told the station that Brianna Rich was staying at her mother’s house while she dealt with a drug problem that may have become active again after she was sober for two years. Bridgett Rich told WKYT that Brianna Rich had tried to stab their mother years before, but Carol Rich’s boyfriend at the time stopped her.

Brittney Rich said of her sister, “I do want her to be in jail forever. She is dangerous.”
