Caitlin Clark allegedly rushed to the defense of an Indiana Fever fan who butted heads with A’ja Wilson, according to one expert lip reader.

With just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Fever’s 99-88 win over the Las Vegas Aces in Game 2 of their first-round series, Sophie Cunningham was called for a blocking foul on Wilson. Moments after the whistle blew, the four-time MVP angrily confronted an Indiana supporter sitting courtside and began shouting in their direction, prompting a Gainbridge Fieldhouse security member to hold her back.

Following a lengthy stoppage in play, officials issued Wilson a technical foul for her animated display. Per expert lip reader Nicola Hickling, on behalf of Covers.com, Clark told one referee during the break: “You guys started on him, it’s not nice.”

Speaking to reporters during a postgame press conference, Wilson accused the Fever fan in question of stepping towards her and pointing. “I don’t know if you guys know me, but I don’t really get into the s—,” she said.

“I try to play my game, keep it pushing. But if I’m just walking, cause I just got the foul, I’m chilling. And if I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a d— what you said.

“I don’t give a d— how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable.”

In subsequent interviews, Wilson reaffirmed that the fan’s behavior — whether at a sporting event or in day-to-day life — should not be tolerated.

“You don’t step towards me — you never should — and point at me,” she added. “I’m not for that s— at all. Excuse my French, and God bless me. But that there is, it’s unacceptable.”

On the heels of the fiery incident, the Fever revealed that the fan “was not removed” after a review of the stadium footage determined they didn’t violate the code of conduct.

“We had security look into it,” a Fever spokesperson said. “There was found no violation of fan code of conduct, therefore the fan was allowed back in.”

Wilson did little to hide her disappointment with the Fever’s decision, stating: “And how he gets back in the game because they said he didn’t do anything? Of course he didn’t, and that’s fine.

“And I apologize to my team because I got us a tech. But it’s just certain things that I’m just not going to allow anymore because it’s just unacceptable.

“So you don’t know me at all, to come and step towards me and point at me and say anything out your mouth to me, so yeah. I apologize to my team.”

Aces head coach Becky Hammon insisted that Las Vegas had Wilson’s back, noting that she’s never seen the three-time WNBA champion react in such a way. “I didn’t exactly see what happened, I kind of saw the aftermath,” Hammon said.

“I’ve never A’ja Wilson go like that, so whatever was done, I can tell you she felt very disrespected in that moment. I’ve never seen her really react like that ever, so whatever it was, it doesn’t have any place, I don’t think, in an arena.”
