This was stated by Mahomes when his team won 33-30 in overtime against the Colts on September 20.The QB commented on how the team’s perception was changing so quickly, having played just two games. Though the Chiefs started the season full of questions, they have answered all of them in two wins.

The experienced quarterback understands how dangerous it is when praise becomes too much for the team.

“In this league, it’s week-to-week… All offseason, we heard about how bad we were… How can you keep that hunger now that everyone is praising you, telling you you’re great… We’re nowhere near where we want to be… You have to go out every week and have that mentality if you want to have success.”

It is even more significant in the case of Mahomes, who fully understands what the Chiefs have already gone through. Last season, things did not go well for the team; however, Mahomes’ 2025 season abruptly ended due to a knee injury, and it was expected that the quarterback would struggle to perform outside the pocket after his recovery.

In the first two games back, those expectations were proven wrong. In the first game with the Broncos, Mahomes managed to score 184 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. In the second game with the Colts, Mahomes showed how important it was for the Chiefs to have him on their side, making 32 out of 47 completions for 382 passing yards and three touchdowns again, without throwing any interceptions.

Therefore, even after two games, he has managed to accumulate 566 passing yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception. Besides, he ran with the football 09 times and scored one touchdown.

In the third week of play, the team is set to travel to Miami to play against the Dolphins on September 27. And for Mahomes, the challenge is no longer proving Kansas City can rise up after a bad 2025 season, but sustaining this edge now that people are viewing them differently.
