A 6-year-old wasn’t allowed at her cousin’s birthday party. Then family learned why

A family row over a teenager’s birthday plans has sparked a debate online after one relative questioned whether a 6-year-old girl was truly being excluded from a family celebration.

The discussion appeared in a popular Reddit post shared Monday by user Ssupp_, who described a conflict involving two sisters, Mara and Lola, and their daughters.

According to the post this week, Lola’s daughter, Josie, is turning 16 and chose to celebrate her birthday by playing laser tag with family members.

However, the venue where the party is being held has a minimum age requirement of 10, meaning Mara’s 6-year-old daughter, Fiona, would not be allowed to participate.

Tensions Flare

Rather than leaving Fiona out of the celebration entirely, Lola made alternate arrangements. While the older family members played laser tag for approximately 40 minutes, Fiona’s grandmother planned to take her to an indoor playground located at the same venue.

Afterward, everyone would come together for coffee and cake.

Despite the plan, tensions emerged when Mara argued that her daughter was being excluded because she wanted to spend time with her cousins Josie and Addy.

The Reddit poster disagreed, explaining that the age restriction came from the venue rather than from any family member.

“Lola explained that Josie specifically chose laser tag for her 16th birthday,” the poster wrote.

“She said that if Mara thinks Fiona would be upset waiting, Mara and Fiona could simply join everyone afterwards for cake.”

The situation apparently became more complicated when Mara spoke to Fiona about the party. According to the post, Mara told her daughter something similar to: “Aunt Lola says you can’t play laser tag. It’s unfair and you’ll have to wait.”

The poster felt that description misrepresented what had happened.

“I think there’s a big difference between telling a 6-year-old, ‘You aren’t old enough yet, but Grandma is going to do something fun with you,’ and telling her that her aunt won’t let her participate and that it’s unfair,” they wrote.

Family Embroiled

The disagreement soon extended beyond the immediate family. The poster explained that their mother became caught in the middle of the dispute and felt stressed by the situation. Their father also contacted Lola because he believed Fiona was being excluded.

As a potential compromise, he suggested that Josie, Addy and Fiona spend time together at the indoor playground before the laser tag activity. He even offered to cover the cost.

While acknowledging the suggestion was thoughtful, the Reddit contributor questioned whether it was reasonable to expect a teenager to spend part of her own birthday celebration at an activity designed for much younger children.

“But should a 16-year-old really be expected to spend part of her own birthday at an indoor playground just so a 6-year-old doesn’t feel left out?” the poster asked.

They emphasized that Fiona would still be invited to the birthday gathering and would have time with her cousins after the laser tag session.

“To me, exclusion would be saying, ‘We don’t want Fiona at the birthday,’” the user wrote, pointing out, “That’s not happening.”

‘Absolutely ridiculous’

The post has received more than 1,200 upvotes and about 950 comments, with readers weighing in on whether the birthday plan was fair, or if Fiona was being unfairly left out.

A commentator declared that, “Kids need to learn to live with disappointment. It’s ridiculous. Although, they could have said it in a much nicer way.”

Another person offered, “It’s absolutely ridiculous to expect the 16 year old to cater to the 6 year old on her special day.”

A supporter sought to reassure the poster by noting that a venue was picked where there was something for the 6 year old to do and a grandmother willing to do it with her, adding, “Your sister, Mara, is being a twit.”

The poster replied: “I agree!”
