A traveler got an empty row on a 13-hour flight. Then another family moved in

A passenger who thought she had lucked out with an empty row on a long-haul flight ended up navigating a series of unexpected challenges after agreeing to share the space with another traveler.

Attracting more than 2,600 upvotes and 620 comments, Reddit user pooferss_ explained that she initially believed she would have an entire row to herself on a nearly 13-hour overnight flight.

“I got an empty row on an airplane. Until I wasn’t alone anymore,” the original poster (OP) wrote this week.

According to the post, flight attendants informed her before departure that the full row would remain empty. Since it was nearly 11 p.m. and a long flight was ahead, the OP moved to the window seat and settled in.

A Simple Request

The situation changed shortly after takeoff when a man approached her with a request.

He explained that he either was traveling with two young children or was seated near them and hoped to move to the aisle seat in the otherwise empty row for some extra room and quiet.

The passenger agreed, saying she understood that only the man would be joining her. With a seat still separating them, she expected both travelers would be able to enjoy some personal space during the overnight journey.

After the meal service, however, another unexpected development followed.

A woman carrying a baby arrived at the row and told the passenger that her husband had said she could sit there as well. The woman turned out to be the man’s wife.

While the OP accepted the situation, the arrangement was not what she had anticipated.

Flooding Her Area

The baby slept in the middle seat, but occasionally woke up crying, often just as the passenger was about to fall asleep. At the same time, the mother slept in the aisle seat, making it difficult for the passenger to get out and visit the restroom without disturbing her.

The traveler said she also had to make frequent bathroom trips and worried about waking both the mom and child whenever she tried to squeeze past them.

The row-sharing situation was only part of a difficult flight experience.

The OP said the passenger seated directly in front repeatedly opened the window shade during the night, flooding her area with light.

According to the post, the man said, “he just wanted to see the midnight sun.”

The traveler also spilled a bottle of iced tea on herself and her carry-on bag shortly after waking up, soaking a book in the process.

“At least my copy of Dracula now smells like peaches, I guess,” she joked.

‘Rule of thumb’

Redditors had thoughts and tips to share.

“The rule of thumb is to immediately lie down and pretend to sleep if you get a whole row to yourself,” began a contributor.

“For eating, stay in the aisle seat and strategically position pillows and jackets and other stuff on the other two seats.”

An individual lamented: “Hate to say it, but don’t be nice and accommodating on a plane.”

A fellow pundit reassured the OP: “You’re learning. There’s always someone trying to take advantage and take what isn’t there’s. Never give anything to these people. Protect what is yours and defend it with your life.”

Despite the string of setbacks, the traveler concluded that the experience was not entirely negative.

“Only mildly infuriating as the flight and everyone on it was fine, landing and takeoff went well, staff was kind, all drinks except alcohol were free, I got a free bottle of rosé wine with my meal and I’m young so I survive without a full night’s sleep,” she shared.
