NEW YORK (WPIX) — The self-proclaimed and accused “mastermind” of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center is scheduled to stand trial in 2028, according to an order issued Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Michael Schrama issued the order after prosecutors had requested Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s trial begin in January 2027 at the U.S. Navy Base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Schrama ruled that request to be “incompatible” with trial conduct order and that a more “realistic” trial date would be June 5, 2028.

That is when assembly, challenges and empanelment will commence. Opening statements will come 30 days after members are empaneled.

Mohammed is being prosecuted alongside two others, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, accused in the plot that led to nearly 3,000 deaths in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon that day.

The case began in 2012 when Mohammed and the others were arraigned. Schrama is the fifth judge to serve on the case.
