PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is releasing new details about the arrest of California murder suspect Cris Jones, who allegedly told authorities he was his dead roommate, who was found buried in their backyard.

On August 2, Cris Jones was arrested by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team in the Mt. Hood National Forest.

The arrest comes after a CCSO deputy on patrol contacted a camper on July 30, near Harriet Lake. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the camper identified himself as 61-year-old Daniel Joslin and claimed to be the owner of a nearby black Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The deputy checked the vehicle registration and the license plate, which were matched to the name given by the man – Daniel Joslin.

But there was a problem. Daniel Joslin was recently reported missing on July 3 after he hadn’t contacted family or friends for about 10 days, authorities said.

Deputies then learned that the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in California was investigating the death of Joslin and said the individual at the campsite could have been 60-year-old Cris Jones — the roommate of Joslin and his suspected murderer.

On July 29, San Bernardino County investigators found Joslin’s remains in the backyard of a Yucca Valley home he shared with Jones. His body was found in a shallow grave, officials said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office teamed up to identify the individual at the campsite as Jones, who was using Joslin’s identity and driving his truck.

On Sunday, Aug. 2, the CCSO SWAT Team and an air unit were deployed to the area where they previously contacted Jones. The air unit found Jones, who was then arrested.

According to CCSO, Jones also had outstanding warrants from Clackamas and Washington counties, noting a knife and sheath were recovered from Jones’ front pants pocket.

Jones was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail, where detectives from San Bernardino County later interviewed him.

As of Wednesday, Jones remained in custody pending extradition to California on the murder charge.
