Jonathan Taylor Thomas‘ legal trouble isn’t over — In Touch has learned his recent alleged skirmish with cops was caught on video, which authorities say is part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

As In Touch previously reported, the Home Improvement alum, 45, was the passenger in a car at 12:30 a.m. on September 21 when deputies conducted a traffic stop and he allegedly exited the vehicle and began distracting cops.

“Deputies attempted to detain (Jonathan) for obstruction and public intoxication, at which point, [Thomas] kicked a deputy in the stomach,” police said in a statement to In Touch. The actor “was arrested, transported, and booked. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.”

His arrest was later downgraded to a detention, and no formal charges were filed, per records viewed by In Touch.

In Touch‘s request for body and dash cam footage of the incident under the California Public Records Act was rejected by the Sheriff’s Department to apparently safeguard the criminal case.

“The disclosure of such information would also jeopardize the completion of an ongoing and active criminal investigation, as well as the potential safety of witnesses, which clearly outweighs the public interest in disclosure at this time,” officials said in response to the request.

Records show the I’ll Be Home for Christmas star was released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station the next day, while investigators present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, who will eventually decide whether to slap him with criminal charges, per People.

Thomas, who rose to fame as middle son Randy on Home Improvement for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999, has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years and was recently described by a source to the Daily Mail as being a “grumpy guy.”

The actor, who graced the covers of many teen magazines during his heartthrob era, largely left Hollywood behind in 2005, studying at Harvard, Columbia and St. Andrew’s University in Scotland. He recently returned to TV with a guest-starring role opposite his old costar Tim Allen on Last Man Standing.
