A Florida woman faces hate crime charges after police say she attacked a Jewish teenager wearing a yarmulke at a Target Starbucks.

According to a criminal complaint, 43-year-old Chyvonne Palmer confronted the teen without provocation. She struck him twice with a cellphone—hitting his head and shoulder—before briefly returning to her seat.

Moments later, Palmer approached the teen again. “Palmer again stood up, grabbed a metal chair, and aggressively approached [the victim] while holding the chair in a raised position, attempting to strike him,” the complaint states. A witness reported hearing her repeatedly shout, “I hate them.”

Bystanders stepped in to stop the chair attack, allowing the victim to flee into a restroom. Palmer then sat back down until responding officers arrested her.

Palmer is charged with battery, disorderly conduct, and aggravated assault with prejudice. At her bond hearing, a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge ordered, “You cannot go to that Target under any circumstances, do you understand, ma’am?”

She is being held on a $12,750 bond as the State Attorney’s Hate Crimes Unit handles the case.
