A Florida woman is behind bars in Escambia County facing murder charges in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend after investigators uncovered dumped evidence that contradicted her claims of self-defense.

Deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office were called to a hotel on Pensacola Boulevard on August 31, where they made contact with 23-year-old Ashanti Brown.

Brown told arriving deputies that she had shot her boyfriend during an argument at an apartment on Pine Forest Road, claiming the shooting was in self-defense. She also told law enforcement that she drove the man’s vehicle from the apartment to the hotel following the gunfire.

Deputies went to the Pine Forest Road apartment to verify the report and discovered a 26-year-old man dead inside from a gunshot wound.

As the homicide investigation unfolded, detectives determined that the physical evidence did not align with Brown’s self-defense narrative. Instead, investigators found that evidence had been intentionally discarded after the shooting.

Among the recovered items was a doorbell camera, which deputies tracked down and pulled from a storm drain across county lines in Santa Rosa County.Brown was taken into custody and booked on charges of homicide and tampering with physical evidence.
