Kentucky high society scandalized as pillar of community female judge, 50, is suspended

A Kentucky judge was suspended this week after a damaging report into her behavior uncovered a series of bizarre courtroom antics.

Judge Lauren Ogden, who oversees the Jefferson County Family Court, was suspended for 30 days after it was found she violated the Code of Judicial Conduct.

According to the decision seen by the Daily Mail, during one hearing she had her judicial robe unzipped to show off a shirt covered with champagne glasses.

In another hearing, it was found that Judge Ogden, who earns a little over $160,000 according to records, was eating food and texting on her phone.

It wasn’t just the bizarre outfit choice and the eating either, the conduct commission said they had received numerous complaints concerning her behavior relating to seven cases.

The commission found that in one custody case the 50-year-old did not provide a father with proper notice or due process.

In that same case, she also did not allow his attorney to cross-examine witnesses and did not make findings or conclusions in the best interests of the child.

It was also found that in another case she denied a man due process by allowing him to introduce evidence or give him a chance to be heard.

Judge Ogden said to the man: ‘The standard is very low. I just have to decide who to believe,’ the commission found.

While overseeing another case, it was also found she ‘facilitated the bodacious action of a non-custodian to remove a child from it’s mother’s sole custody in another state without notice to the mother.’

In that matter, the state Court of Appeals intervened and issued an order granting emergency relief, concluding that Judge Ogden violated the woman’s rights.

The commission found that she also ordered a father’s unsupervised time with his three kids to be suspended ‘without making sufficient findings of endangerment.’

According to the commission, the Court of Appeals reversed that order earlier this year but she then refused to implement their mandate over five hearings.

Referring to the Court of Appeals, she said: ‘Don’t really recognize, they don’t do what I do every day and we have to worry about the kids more than anything,’ the commission found.

Judge Ogden did not restore the previous unsupervised parenting time to the father until six months after the Court of Appeals handed down their ruling, the commission said.

In another case, it was found that she never read the case pleadings or filings and considered matters from a domestic violence order without taking testimony.

When the father involved in that case appeared, she told him that the hearing was ‘just to talk about your kids,’ the commission ruled.

It was also found that she took a sarcastic tone, waved her hands, and refused to let him or his attorney cross-examine the mother of his children.

She also did not consider all of another person’s evidence ‘nor allowed him to respond to all allegations and made findings based upon hearsay statements,’ the commission found.

In another, it was found that she made ‘several facial expressions’ which included ‘rolling her eyes and smirking’ while listening to testimony.

She also kept on saying ‘wow,’ when hearing testimony and laughed at a man and his attorney when they were speaking, it was found.

Judge Ogden also whispered questions to opposing counsel who were in the courtroom while the man and his attorney appeared over Zoom, the commission said.

In another case, she told a woman: ‘Wow, you were the de facto caregiver. Thank God for grandparents.’

In that same case, she dropped her jaw when hearing about a woman’s mental health, the commission found.

While a defendant appeared over Zoom, it was found that Judge Ogden ‘muted’ the man before saying: ‘We are going to have you sit in the corner and be quiet.’

She also told another defendant that he was ‘hostile,’ did not ‘seem stable’ and was ‘just rogue’ while expressing shock that he was in the military.

‘These expressions and behaviors highlight Judge Ogden’s lack of impartiality throughout the proceeding,’ the commission found.

They added: ‘These actions and behaviors exhibit a failure by Judge Ogden to maintain the proper order and decorum.

‘Judge Ogden has acknowledged the concerns raised in these proceedings and has accepted responsibility.

‘In light of Judge Ogden’s conduct, she is hereby suspended from her duties without pay for a period of thirty days,’ the suspension will begin on November 8 it added.

In a statement issued via her attorney, Judge Ogden said: ‘Every person who comes into my courtroom should leave knowing that he or she was heard.

‘That responsibility rests with me. Families who come before the Family Court deserve both prompt attention and a full hearing, and I am committed to providing both. I respect the work of the Judicial Conduct Commission, and I accept its Order.’
