Man accused in weekend Royal Oak shooting charged
A 20-year-old man accused of shooting at a woman in a car in downtown Royal Oak has been charged with assault, officials said.
Rico Decarlos Jones, Jr. was arraigned Thursday in 44th District Court in Royal Oak, according to Royal Oak police and the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. The Detroit resident is charged with two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder, and two counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison for each assault count and up to two years for each count of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
A magistrate set the 31-year-old’s bond at $100,000 and scheduled his next court hearing for Oct. 9.
Jones’ attorney, Mohammed Nasser, was not immediately available for comment on Friday.

How the incident unfolded
Officials said two women came to the Royal Oak Police Department at about 8:40 p.m. on Sunday to report their vehicle had been struck by gunfire near the intersection of East Fifth and Williams streets. Prosecutors said bullets struck the rear windshield and rear bumper.
The victims told police that before the shooting, one of them was involved in a fight with another woman. The pair left, got into their car, and when they were driving away, a man fired a gun at them, according to authorities.
No one reported being injured, officials said.
Officers went to the location of the reported shooting and found several bullet casings.
Detectives said they developed two suspects in the shooting. With the help of Troy police, officers located the suspects and arrested them, investigators said.
Police identified Jones as one of the suspects and a 19-year-old Troy woman as the other. They said officers released the woman pending further investigation.
“Fortunately, no one was seriously injured or killed,” Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore said in a statement. “Thanks to some outstanding collaboration and hard work by our investigators, these dangerous suspects were quickly identified and arrested before they could harm anyone else.”
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald added: “There is never a good reason to use a gun to settle an argument. We can be thankful no one was injured. However, the defendant’s alleged actions endangered two young women as well as any bystanders, and he must be held accountable for his actions.”
Other Metro Detroit cases
Jones is among those in Michigan to be accused of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
On Thursday, a Pontiac woman accused of throwing boiling water on a teen during a fight last weekend was charged with assault.
Last weekend, a Michigan Burger King employee was arrested after allegedly biting his coworker in the face.
Last month, an Auburn Hills man was arraigned on charges stemming from a shooting at a Pontiac stadium that wounded two people.
