Melania Trump, who is notably private about her personal affairs, has offered up a candid glimpse into her family life, acknowledging that her time with her adult son Barron Trump is increasingly infrequent.

In a recent interview, the first lady was asked about making time for her family, particularly Barron, while managing her professional and public schedule.

Melania Trump’s comments revealed the struggles she’s facing transitioning from raising a little child to spending time with a son who is entering young adulthood and his college years.

Melania Trump Addresses Her Approach To Family Time

During a September 23 Fox Business show, co-host Taylor Riggs was curious about how Melania manages to spend time with her family given her role as First Lady of the United States.

Riggs specifically asked, “Do you still try to get your family together for Sunday night dinners or try to see Barron when you can? What are pieces of advice for moms who feel like they’re so stretched thin, trying to do it all?”

In response, Melania revealed her pragmatic approach to family time. She said, “It’s good to schedule, right? It’s always good because everybody’s so busy.”

Melania suggested that they are usually engaged in their own responsibilities, so they have to pencil in time to spend with each other.

The First Lady illustrated her point by explaining how her husband, Donald Trump, works in the Oval Office until 9:30 at night, making everyday family dinners entirely impractical.

She added, “So do you wait until you will have dinner? You don’t, because he’s busy. I’m busy too.”

The First Lady’s Changing Relationship With Barron Trump

Barron is now a young adult studying at New York University, and the way he relates to his 56-year-old mother has inevitably changed.

The first lady offered a look into her relationship with her first son, acknowledging that family time is becoming less frequent. “It’s less and less family time. It’s suffering because of it,” she stated.

However, she framed the change as a natural part of the young man’s development. “But that’s OK. We are here to work, to do a good job, and that’s what matters,” she said, per Hola! Magazine.

Melania continued, saying, “Barron is already a young man, so sometimes he’s maybe even happy that, you know, I just want to do my stuff. And that’s okay.”

The first lady appears to be okay with being a little distant from her grown-up son, which is noticeably different from how she reportedly felt just months ago.

Melania Trump Previously Implied Barron Needed Her ‘Nonstop’

Melania previously implied that Barron, who was 19 at the time, needed her to be there for him constantly.

Appearing on “Mornings with Maria,” now known as “Mornings with Fox Business,” the former host Maria Bartiromo asked Melania to speak about what it’s like being “the First Lady of the greatest country in the world” while being a mother.

She responded, saying, “It’s very important. You need to be there for a child nonstop, especially when they need you, especially at that age that Barron is.”

At the time, some social media users felt it was “bizarre” that she felt a 19-year-old Barron needed constant supervision.

The First Lady’s Comments About Supporting Her Son Led To Him Being Trolled Online

Melania’s remarks about Barron still needing her went viral at the time, prompting harsh scrutiny of the first lady and her young son.

An X user commented at the time that the first lady spoke about Barron like he was a preschooler.

Another said, “My 19-year-old son was away at college, living in a house, and I spoke to him maybe twice a week. He was thriving and didn’t need his mommy ‘nonstop.’”

A third asked if there has ever been a more “infantilized family than the Trumps,” adding that the revelation was “absolutely bizarre.”

Melania, as per her recent comments, appears to have become okay with being a more hands-off mother as her son continues college life and young adulthood.

Melania And Barron Trump’s Bond Is Rooted In Their Slovenian Heritage

In an interview with USA Today, the first lady shared insight on a bond they both share through their Slovenian roots.

Melania discussed the close relationship Barron had with her late mother, Amalija Knavs, who passed away in January 2024.

“Barron and my mother shared a lovely bond through the Slovenian language, a beautiful connection that celebrates their heritage,” she told the outlet.

She added that, “Both speaking the same language allowed them to communicate deeply and meaningfully.”

Barron’s grandmother reportedly gave him a “strong connection to his Slovenian roots,” and Melania described their bond as “magical.”

Melania was born in Slovenia before moving to America and eventually becoming a United States citizen.
