Mitch McConnell’s wife raises eyebrows as she travels to China days after he was taken to hospital unconscious
Elaine Chao, the spouse of Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, is said to have embarked on an official visit to China merely three days following her husband’s cardiac arrest.
The 73 year old Chao has been wed to the 84 year old Republican lawmaker since 1993. She held the position of transportation secretary during President Donald Trump’s initial term.

Images appearing in media outlets allegedly depict her in discussions with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, occurring just 72 hours after McConnell was admitted to hospital.

The pair were seemingly engaged in talks aimed at bolstering ties between the United States and China. Multiple colleagues of McConnell have refused to provide updates on his medical status, the Daily Beast reports.
Details regarding his consciousness level or how his office operations are being managed during his absence remain unclear, reports the Express US.
“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” a statement from the Senator’s office to the Daily Beast said. “The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
News of McConnell’s hospitalization emerged after an emergency services call became public knowledge, indicating he experienced a heart attack. The medical emergency took place on June 14, with paramedics dispatched to his home that same day.
Reports indicate he received CPR in the aftermath of his cardiac episode. Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard, cautioned in a CNN interview that patients who receive CPR following heart attacks frequently cannot manage their basic bodily functions right away.
“If it does work and we can restart their heart and their heart is beating spontaneously, that begins a long road to recovery, even for the healthiest of patients,” he explained to the network.
“So when you have a person who is elderly and who has other underlying medical conditions, it’s really concerning,” he continued.
This isn’t the first time McConnell, 84, has experienced a medical emergency. Last October, he tumbled at Capitol Hill when reporters approached him.
In February 2025, he was spotted in a wheelchair outside the Capitol following two back-to-back falls.
Earlier this year in February, he was hospitalized for eight days after developing flu-like symptoms.
Charles Booker, a Democratic challenger seeking to unseat McConnell, questioned whether the senator was attempting to hide the severity of his medical situation and whether he remained capable of serving in office.
“Like every Kentuckian, I am concerned about the health of Senator Mitch McConnell. While I am certain he is receiving excellent care, I know from personal experience the fear and uncertainty our family and loved ones feel in the wake of a medical emergency,” Booker stated.
