  • Police said the assault occurred in front of the victim’s younger siblings, ages 5 and 7
  • Reyes lives in the same building as the children but it wasn’t immediately clear if he resided in the unit sharing the wall with the girl’s family

A Georgia man has been arrested on several charges including kidnapping and attempted rape in connection with an alleged assault last week.

Obed Reyes is accused of breaking into his neighbor’s Gainesville apartment through a closet wall from the next unit and viciously attacking a 15-year-old girl on Aug. 5, the Gainesville Police Department said in a statement this week.

Reyes, 29, is a resident of the same building but it wasn’t immediately clear if he lived in the unit from where he allegedly broke the wall.

Officers responding to a possible domestic violence incident on Aug. 5 caught Reyes actively assaulting the girl and intervened, police alleged in the statement.

Reyes allegedly smashed a hole through a closet wall from the neighboring apartment and viciously attacked the teen. After “violently” entering the unit, per police, he allegedly grabbed the girl by her hair and punched her multiple times.

As the alleged assault continued in front of the girl’s 5-year-old and 7-year-old siblings, Reyes also threatened to rape her, police claimed.

She was able to escape and scream for help. Witnesses who called 911 told dispatchers a man was “dragging a female by her hair and hitting her repeatedly while she was screaming during the struggle,” the statement reads.

The teen did not know the alleged perpetrator, according to police.

Reyes has been charged with burglary, aggravated assault, attempted rape, kidnapping and cruelty to children.Online court records for Reyes were not available as of Friday and it wasn’t immediately clear if her has entered pleas or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
