Authorities in California are seeking the public’s help to find three men accused of kidnapping and killing a new father after allegedly mistaking him for another man who was in Canada at the time.

Avtar Singh, 57, was found dead in a remote area in Lake Berryessa in Napa County, Calif., on Feb. 20, three days after he was kidnapped from a local Sikh temple.

Now, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office says it has identified three suspects in connection with the kidnapping and murder.

Police are looking for 25-year-old Alberto Alonso Alencastro, 20-year-old Alfonso Cresencio Segura Arellano and 22-year-old Barnabe Antonio Segura Arellano, the sheriff’s office said on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The investigation began when police responded to a gurdwara — a Sikh temple — in Tracy, Calif., for a missing-person report on Feb. 17.

Surveillance footage showed Singh with three individuals in dark clothing who were seen putting him into a vehicle against his will, the sheriff’s office said at the time.

Investigators determined the suspects were targeting another individual and kidnapped Singh by mistake, the sheriff’s office said in its statement this week.

The intended target, who was in Canada at the time of Singh’s killing, and his family had received threatening messages, according to KCRA. Authorities said the man had been accused of stealing a trailer of cargo, SFGate and KCRA reported.

In a GoFundMe set up soon after his killing, Singh’s family said he had just become a new father to triplets, who were then 6 months old.

His family described him as a beloved fixture in the Sikh community who served at the temple.

“He was known for his humility, quiet dedication, and loving nature that made everyone feel like family,” read part of the fundraiser.

“His seva [meaning service], sincerity, and unwavering faith touched countless lives, and his absence leaves a profound void in our community,” it read.
