Police announce charges after ‘ugly’ youth football brawl in Pennsylvania
A mid-game brawl at a youth football game in Pennsylvania has led to several police charges.
The fight broke out during the final minutes of Saturday’s game between Carlynton and Keystone Oaks, teams made up of 8 and 9-year-old players. The game was being played in Carnegie, a suburb of Pittsburgh. DeQuay Canton, a 24-year-old coach for Carlynton, confronted opposing coach Frank McGrath, 37, leading to the brawl.
The fight ended up escalating, with referees being unable to break it up. Joseph Kobiak, a 35-year-old coach for Keystone Oaks, was seen getting into the fight, as well. On Thursday, the Carnegie Police Department announced that all three coaches have been charged:
- Canton was hit with disorderly conduct and harassment charges, as police said he threw punches “which would have caused substantial harm and most definitely caused serious inconvenience.”
- McGrath was hit with disorderly conduct and harassment charges.
- Kobiak was hit with disorderly conduct and harassment charges, too.
Canton and McGrath have both been suspended “indefinitely” by the Steel City Youth Football League.
Meanwhile, five additional people involved in the skirmish have been hit with suspensions by the league.
The Steel City Youth Football League announced that it is continuing to investigate the incident.
“League officials are reviewing video footage, referee reports, and witness statements. The scope of this inquiry is not limited to the ejected individuals; the investigation may expand to include additional personnel, coaches, or spectators found to be involved,” While it’s unclear what exactly led to the mid-game youth football coaches fight, it’s clear that many parents involved with youth sports across America have major issues when it comes to their kids and their youth sports. It doesn’t need to be nearly as serious as some parents make it out to be. Let the kids have fun and stay out of it.
