Nicholas Brandram, the grandson of the late Princess Katherine of Greece, was found dead in his London apartment this week. He was 44 years old.

Brandram, a banker and former British Army soldier, was arrested in June in connection on suspicion of pushing a woman in front of a bus in London in 2017. During the incident, a male jogger shoved a 33-year-old in front of a bus on Putney Bridge in West London; the crime went viral in the UK as the “Putney Pusher.” Brandram’s family denies he was involved.

The Metropolitan Police said Brandram’s death was “unexpected but is not believed to be suspicious,” per the New York Times.

“Our thoughts are with Mr. Brandram’s family and friends at this deeply distressing time,” Dan Knowles, a chief superintendent with the Metropolitan Police, said in as statement. “We recognize the significant impact his death will have on those who knew and loved him. We also understand the strain that being subject to a police investigation can place on individuals and their families.”

Brandram’s family told the BBC yesterday that he “took his own life after months of immense pressure caused by a Metropolitan Police investigation.” The family also added there was “no evidence placing him on Putney Bridge at that time, and no credible evidence that he was the man shown in the footage” and “the evidence proved the opposite.”

Elsewhere in their statement, his family said that after his arrest “the consequences did not disappear. He was left for months carrying the stigma of an appalling allegation which the police themselves clearly recognised was unsupported by the evidence. He lived with the shame, anxiety, humiliation, and extraordinary pressure created by a wholly unnecessary investigation.”

An inquest into his death will open next week. The investigation into the Putney Bridge incident remains ongoing.
