Batwoman star Ruby Rose has shared what she said are texts from Hayden Panettiere, in which the latter reportedly said she sobbed over her mother Lesley Vogel’s “cruelty” before the actress died Sunday at 36.
Amid renewed speculation about Panettiere’s relationship with her estranged mother following the Nashville alum’s death, Rose, 40, posted to Threads Wednesday a pair of screenshots that she said showed text messages from Panettiere outlining Vogel’s alleged behavior.
One of the texts saw someone saved as “Hayden” in Rose’s phone tell the star, “I’d love to do a podcast/anothony [sic] Bourdain show where we talk about issues and then go to the ends of the earth to find solutions,” after Rose told the individual that their personal story had resonance.
Another text showed Rose telling the individual that “they did not act or behave like mothers,” regarding their respective parents, while the person on the other end replied with a somber recollection of their mother’s past.
“I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I’m 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain,” the person wrote. “I’m her only child left and this is how she wants to handle the situation?!”
Entertainment Weekly could not verify the identity of the person in the texts shared by Rose. EW has attempted to reach Rose’s team for more information and has reached out to Vogel for comment.
Rose’s messages saw the Orange Is the New Black performer defending Panettiere amid Vogel’s widely criticized comments about her daughter’s death.
In an interview with NBC News, Vogel reacted to Panettiere’s death while also criticizing the actress’ on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, saying her daughter had gone down the “wrong path.”
“This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death, and that was Brian Hickerson,” Vogel said Tuesday. She added, “I think it becomes very difficult to be true to yourself and I think Hayden sadly lost her way and I wish it were different.”
CBS Mornings anchor Gayle King also publicly criticized Panettiere’s mother after the statement, reacting Wednesday morning on the air to Vogel’s words by calling them “sad” to read.
“You know, guys, you read this and all I can think is, ‘Thanks, Mom, for nothing,’” King said, two days after she spoke on Panettiere’s death by telling the talk show’s audience that she felt, during Panettiere’s final interview with her on the show in May, the star was “clearly still struggling” with something during the exchange.
Following Panettiere’s death on Sunday, the Greenville, S.C., coroner Mike Ellis said in a statement obtained by EW that the star’s body had no signs of trauma that would’ve led to death, which occurred after 2 p.m. local time.
“The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies. This investigation remains active and ongoing,” the statement read. “No further details are available for release at this time.”
Panettiere, a former child star, had been open in recent years about her experience with alcohol and opioids, and had also discussed her strained relationship with Vogel in various interviews.
In May, she said on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast that she cut professional ties with her mom when she was 19.
“I just wanted her to be my mom,” she said during the emotional interview. “She came into my trailer during lunch while we were filming Heroes, and I told her, ‘I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom.’” Panettiere alleged that Vogel’s response was: “You owe me.”
