A 37-year-old man in Australian is in critical condition after he was mauled by two dogs while jogging through a park.
Queensland police said that the attack took place at around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, as the man was jogging through 7th Brigade Park in the Brisbane suburb of Chermside, according to 9News, the Brisbane Times and News.com.au.
The man was found with life-threatening injuries to both arms, as well as other injuries to his face and legs, and he was taken to a local hospital.
Police could not initially locate the two dogs at the scene, as they ran away after officers used their guns. A hunt for the dogs immediately got underway, and police used helicopters and officers on foot to sweep the area.
One of the dogs, which authorities believe are pit bulls, was located on Friday night in the front yard of a nearby home, and the second was located shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, sleeping on the back deck of a home, per the Times.
The outlets also reported that both dogs were registered to the owner’s previous address and had never been declared dangerous.
The animals are now in the possession of the Brisbane City Council, and officials are deciding what to do with the animals.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim of last night’s horrific dog attack,” the council said.

In an interview with 9News on Saturday, the dogs’ owner, identified as Layla Evans, said that she was “shattered” by the incident and had “walked all over town, all over the park” trying to find the dogs — before being arrested by police on an unrelated matter.
“They’ll bark if you proceed to come in. [If] they feel like harm’s going to be done to me or my partner, then they will proceed to protect, but, apart from that, they’re really good dogs,” she explained, sharing that the dogs, named Louis and Ruby, had been left in the tent where she lives while she went out for dinner with a friend.
“The police told me, finally, that apparently they had got through the roof of the tent and then tore a hole, and that’s how that big hole ended up there,” Evans told 9News.
Minutes after speaking to the Australian news outlet, police arrived and arrested Evans. A police spokesperson told the outlet that she was arrested on an unrelated matter. She had not been charged and is still in police custody.
PEOPLE has reached out to Queensland police for further information.
Authorities are currently seeking an order to euthanize the dogs, the outlets reported. Evans will be able to either surrender the dogs for the order or file an appeal against it.
