A former law enforcement officer was recently arrested for attacking a person who spat in his face, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

On Tuesday, Christopher James Tyler was charged with second-degree assault & battery, SLED said Thursday in a news release.

The incident happened July 25, according to an arrest warrant. Tyler was working for the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and the 35-year-old Orangeburg resident arrested a person called the victim in the arrest warrant.

Tyler had taken the victim to the Orangeburg County Detention Center, where the victim spit in the officer’s face, according to the arrest warrant.

Tyler responded by punching the victim in the face two times, the arrest warrant said. The punches landed while the victim was handcuffed, with arms restrained behind their back, according to the arrest warrant.

Tyler also slammed the victim into a brick wall two times, the arrest warrant shows. The victim also was handcuffed when slammed into the wall, according to the arrest warrant.

Information about the victim’s condition was not available.

The incident was recorded on multiple surveillance cameras, and Tyler confessed to the attack, the arrest warrant said.

When he was arrested, Tyler was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center, SLED said in the release. A $2,500 personal recognizance bond was posted the same day Tyler was arrested, Orangeburg County court records show.

SLED referred to Tyler as a former officer, but it was not clear if he was fired or resigned.

The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety asked SLED to lead the investigation.

The case will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office, and Tyler is scheduled to return to court Oct. 13, according to judicial records.
