Donald Trump reeled off an outlandish story in the Oval Office on Thursday as he signed an executive order banning so-called birth tourism.

The 80-year-old president was taking questions from reporters when he was asked to clarify how many people actually take advantage of birth tourism, the practice of traveling to another country specifically to give birth there, in the US.

Birth tourism in the US is statistically rare, with estimates ranging from 9,000 to 26,000 births per year that could be credited to birth tourism. This represents less than 1% of the roughly 3.6 million total annual US births. Meanwhile, Trump’s golf club members gave him a brutal nickname due to his “cheating” antics.

However, Trump offered a far higher figure. “I’ll tell you right now, hundreds of thousands,” he responded.

The president then launched into a wild story. “You have one man came in with a family had said he had 56 children. Another one came in — they said they had 98 children,” he claimed.Trump continued: “This is not what it was for, this was meant for the babies of slaves, it was right after, one week or two weeks after the Civil War ended. This wasn’t for wealthy multimillionaires, billionaires coming in and bringing 15, 20, 30 children along with them. It’s become a big business and we’re ending that business.”

A clip of Trump’s story quickly went viral on X where critics were quick to flood the comment section as they accused the president of being hypocritical.

Many highlighted reports of Russian tourists flocking to Florida to give birth in Trump’s luxury resorts to their children can have dual citizenship. “He would know, the Russians are breeding like rabbits on a Trump property in Fl,” one X user commented.

“So says the man who lined his pockets with Russian birth tourism at his Florida properties,” a second wrote. “And then that one time in Trump-owned buildings in New York & Miami by ALOT of Russians, so yeah he would be the one to know! FFS why is he still president?!?” a third questioned.

“He’s deeply familiar with birth tourism,” another said as they shared a headline reading “Russians Are Traveling To Trump’s American Properties To Give Birth And Get Dual Citizenship For Their Babies.”

“WTF? Trump was literally making money from birth tourism,” someone else alleged. NBC News reported back in 2018 that birth tourism was bringing a baby boom to Miami and that the condo buildings that bear the Trump name were the most popular among expectant Russian mothers.

The outlet noted that it was not clear whether management was aware and said there was no indication that Trump or the Trump Organization was profiting directly from birth tourism.

Other critics suggested Trump could have been talking about his ally Elon Musk, the South African billionaire who is reported to have fathered at least 14 children in the US.

“So he’s basically just outed Elon Musk as the culprit,” one noted. “Was it a White man? And was his name ELON MUSK, perchance?” a second asked.

“Either the orange buffoon is referring to Elon Musk or he’s just making things up again,” another said.

Many others accused the president of outright lying about the story. “The lies become more ridiculous every day. He just makes up numbers on the spot and spews them, and no one calls him on it. This is a bunch of absurd lies layered on top of a misunderstanding of what birth tourism is,” one commented.

“Blatant lies! Just absurd made up garbage! In no current reality or timeline did this happen period! Just outlandish lies that no one in the media will call out, or push back on,” another raged.
