The claim says France and Ukraine secretly fed Donald Trump false intelligence to test whether it would reach Vladimir Putin, and that the test supposedly proved a leak. It has circulated widely on X, Instagram, Reddit and other platforms.

According to the reporting, the rumor appears to trace back to comments by Vincent Crouzet, a former officer with France’s DGSE intelligence service, during a January 16 appearance on French channel LCI.

Crouzet discussed distrust between Ukrainian and U.S. intelligence services and said Ukrainian officials suspected risks of leaks from the U.S. side to Moscow. He linked that tension to a wider shift in which French President Emmanuel Macron said France was providing two-thirds of Ukraine’s intelligence support.

But Crouzet did not say Ukraine planted fake information as a sting. He later appeared to clarify on X that he had not claimed false intelligence was involved, only that Ukrainians feared possible leaks.

Ukraine’s military intelligence also rejected the fake-intel story, calling it distorted information with no objective basis or real grounds. A Ukrainian source said Kyiv continues to work with international partners, including the United States, “on the principles of professionalism and responsibility.”

So what is documented? There was a French TV discussion about strained trust and changing intelligence cooperation during the war. What is not documented is the viral claim that France and Ukraine set up Trump with fake intelligence and caught him passing it to Russia.

In wartime, intelligence stories are especially vulnerable to translation gaps, clipped video, political spin and viral screenshots. A small wording shift can turn “concerns about leaks” into a full-blown online espionage plot.
