Usha Vance announces major news making JD Vance unique in 150 years of US history

Vice President JD Vance announced on Sunday that Second Lady Usha Vance has given birth to their fourth child.

“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the vice president posted on social media. He thanked the doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit.

The child has been named Alec Neel Vance. His birth marks the first time in over 150 years that a second lady has given birth while in office.

At age 40, Usha is the first woman since the 1870s to welcome a newborn during her spouse’s vice presidency. According to the White House Historical Association, Schuyler Colfax III was born in 1870 while his father, Schuyler Colfax, was serving as vice president to Ulysses S. Grant.

The couple has three other young children, Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel, who are ages 4 to 9.

The couple had originally shared the pregnancy news in January. “We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July,” they wrote.

“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” they added.

Earlier in the year, during the promotion of his new book, Vance indicated that he probably would not take any parental leave following the birth.

Vance has continuously highlighted his concerns about declining birth rates in America. His growing family aligns with his public calls for Americans to have more children. Last year, at the Washington March for Life anti-abortion rally, the Vice President declared, “I want more babies in the United States of America.”

“I want more happy children in our country, and I want beautiful young men and women who are eager to welcome them into the world and eager to raise them,” he added.

During a White House event in Michigan this past March, the vice president, who is a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, shared that he had to convince his wife to expand their family with another child.

“I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.’ And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,’” Vance said. “But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both.”

Additionally, he noted that the 2025 killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was a personal friend, played a role in the choice to expand their family.
