A woman is warning others after she was strangled by her scarf while leaving an event.
Liz Carole dressed up in a floor-length black gown with a matching scarf for a wedding she was attending in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 19. When the ceremony ended, she and her friends ordered a car to go to a nearby restaurant before returning for the reception later that evening.
After the group got into the vehicle and buckled up, the driver began to pull away. Carole was immediately pulled back and “choked” by her scarf because it had gotten stuck.
Carole tells PEOPLE, “My hands flew up to grab at the scarf around my neck, and I screamed, which alerted my friends and made the driver stop the car. Once stopped, I opened the door to find a portion of my scarf was shut in the door and was being wrapped around the tire.”
She recalls, “I was sitting on the other end of the scarf, so instead of it sliding right off, the resistance caused a friction burn between my shoulder blades and across my collarbones.”
Carole says she and her friends were “in shock” by the event. However, she observed her injuries in a mirror and noticed that her skin didn’t look very red, so she decided to proceed with her plans.
“By the time we got to the restaurant though, the pain was much worse, and I could see more clearly that my top layer of skin had been removed,” she says.
Carole decided to go to the urgent care, where the nurses were taken aback by her story.
“While I was getting bandaged up, some of the nurses on duty came into the room to see me and ask about it because they had heard the story from someone else in the hallway! One of the nurses told me it reminded him of the Final Destination movie, which was both hilarious and unsettling,” she claims.
Carole says the first three to four days of her recovery were the worst. But about a week later, she began to experience “less pain and the burns are decreasing in size.”
“Now I’m focusing on scar management,” she says.

Carole, who is from Dallas, later learned that others have had similar incidents.
“I think what surprised me the most about the other experiences were how close in time they occurred. The stories weren’t like, ‘Oh that happened to me a couple of years ago.’ It sounds like all of these occurred within a couple of weeks of each other,” she says.
Carole hopes that sharing her story will keep others from suffering the same outcome. She shared her story in a TikTok video that has since accumulated over 253K views.
“If you’re wearing one of those dresses, just be mindful,” she warned in her video.
Last August, influencer Eli Moulton claimed that she nearly “decapitated” herself after her scarf got stuck under a moving car.
“The dress that held me in a choke hold,” she said at the time.
