Renji Arata, 23, comes home to a house he doesn’t quite live in any more — and finds his stepfather’s workshop door unlocked. What’s inside isn’t a tool. At dinner his mother says the sentence she has been holding for twenty years: I always wanted a daughter. By morning, she has one. And the machine is still humming.
