The Afternoon Heat

A sob hot Thursday afternoon on Laan van Eik. Willem van der Berg, ninety-one… no, seventy-oneeenenzeventig, walks through the street where he has walked for forty years and calls at a yellow door that does something to him. Carolien Vos opens — and she knows exactly who he is. Two years quiet husband, the neighbors behind the glass, Reinier in the barn with the mower: Carolien has been waiting for a reason all summer. She pulls him in, takes him against the corridor wall, and when her knees break, the afternoon is far from over — so she beckons the neighbor over the hedge.
