Modern warfare relies heavily on drones and artillery, yet it remains a deeply human tragedy.

Behind the daily updates from the front lines, the sheer scale of the physical toll can still shock observers.

And recently released numbers point to a staggering week of losses.

A costly week

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a massive spike in battlefield casualties on Sunday. According to the leader, Russian forces lost more than 10,000 troops in just seven days.

These figures cover both dead and wounded soldiers across all active fighting zones.

The staggering total of 10,660 casualties came directly from a military briefing led by Mykhailo Drapatyi, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, according to United24 Media.

The Ukrainian leadership was quick to verify the numbers. Zelenskyy stressed that the military did not simply estimate the enemy’s losses from afar.

“In total, over the course of this week, across all active combat zones on the front lines, our units neutralized 10,660 Russian soldiers, including those killed and wounded. And each such Russian casualty is accompanied by video evidence,” Zelenskyy said, as reported by U24 Media.

Shifting the momentum

The heaviest clashes are currently raging across the Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, and Lyman sectors. Meanwhile, Ukrainian units also continue pushing forward in the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions.

A major push called Operation Vivaldi is driving significant results in the northern part of the Donetsk region. Ukrainian troops have regained control over multiple key settlements and systematically cleared out Russian dugouts around Lyman.

Zelenskyy praised specific units for their recent success, noting that their work prevents Russian commanders from expanding their offensive.

“Every week like this on the front lines, which, given the nature of the overall situation, is becoming ours, Ukrainian, prevents Russia from launching a larger offensive against Ukraine,” the president noted in his statement.

Robots lead the way

A key part of the recent Ukrainian advance relies on new technology. Ground-based robots are taking on the most dangerous jobs before human soldiers even step onto the battlefield.

During Operation Vivaldi, these remote machines cleared 30 kilometers of hidden paths in the Shandryholove sector. Impressively, they finished the job in just two nights without a single human sapper getting hurt.

The Third Army Corps reported that they increasingly send unmanned systems in first. These automated robots now handle complex demining, deliver essential supplies, and support active frontline assaults to keep human infantry safe.
