A man from Mumbai, India, traveled 8,250 miles to North Carolina to find the 17-year-old girl who blocked him on social media, according to investigators.

It happened Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Meadowlands golf community near High Point, and the man’s arrival at the home caused a “disturbance,” officials say.

“Deputies were advised by an Uber driver that an adult male passenger was allegedly stalking a juvenile female,” the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sept. 29 news release.

“Upon arrival, deputies made contact with Prit Pankaj Jain, 31, of Mumbai, India, who revealed that he was attempting to leave gifts for a female who he had been in an online dating relationship. Deputies discovered the female was a juvenile.”

The two met on social media, where Jain was using a false identity, investigators say. The teen realized Jain’s true age after they had been communicating for two years on Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, detectives say.

“Jain … represented himself as a younger male, and entered into a long-term online relationship with the juvenile victim. After the juvenile learned Jain’s true identity, she ended the relationship and blocked further communication,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Investigators determined that Jain subsequently traveled from his home in Mumbai, India, to the United States in an attempt to re-establish contact with the female juvenile.”

Court documents report his attempt to rekindle the relationship came after a failed attempt at extortion. Jain threatened to disclose private photos of the girl if she did not unblock him on social media, an arrest warrant says.

He came to the U.S. knowing the girl’s home address, and he also knew of a secondary address for other family members, investigators say.

Jain was arrested and is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, four counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and one count of sexual extortion, officials said. He is being held without bond.

The Meadowlands development is about a 75-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
