Chris Hansen went to see Robert Pattinson play him. He left without watching a minute

Chris Hansen expected to finally see Robert Pattinson play a fictionalized version of him in A24’s upcoming movie ‘Primetime.’ Instead, he walked into the studio for a private screening and left without watching a single minute.

Hansen, 66, said he arrived at A24’s offices for a 10 a.m. screening ahead of the movie’s Venice Film Festival premiere. The former ‘To Catch a Predator’ host had previously said he planned to watch the film and then decide how he felt about Pattinson’s portrayal of his career.

That plan changed when Hansen was presented with a legal agreement.

Chris Hansen Says the Paperwork Went Too Far

Hansen claimed the agreement would have required him to give up rights connected to his name, image and brand, along with possible legal claims involving the movie.

His attorneys had already reviewed the document and advised him not to sign it.

“This was a very restrictive agreement,” Hansen said. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

A source close to A24 offered a different explanation, saying Hansen was asked to sign a standard NDA used for people viewing an unreleased movie. According to the source, the agreement was primarily intended to prevent spoilers and protect the studio’s material.

Hansen refused to sign. As a result, the screening never happened.

He Still Has No Idea What Pattinson’s Portrayal Looks Like

That leaves Hansen in an unusual position. Robert Pattinson is playing a character inspired by him, but Hansen still has not seen the performance.

He said the filmmakers previously told him ‘Primetime’ was fictionalized in several ways. A24 has described the movie as “inspired by true events” rather than a direct biopic.

Hansen also stressed that he has no financial involvement with the project and was never hired as a consultant. His bigger frustration appears to be that nobody approached him earlier in production.

“If everybody’s concerned” about whether he approves of the movie, Hansen questioned why nobody contacted him when filming began.

‘Primetime’ follows Hansen during the 2006 rise of ‘To Catch a Predator’ and stars Pattinson, who also serves as a producer. Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers and Bokeem Woodbine also appear.

The movie arrives in theaters Sept. 25.

And Hansen already knows what he would tell Pattinson if they meet. He reached for the line audiences have associated with him for years: “Take a seat right over there.”
