The floor has fallen out: Kristen Welker reveals dire text from big Republican Senate source

NBC News’ Kristen Welker revealed Tuesday night that a top Republican Senate source had sent her an alarming text message about the midterm election results, declaring that “the floor has fallen out.”

“This is a big Republican Senate source who just texted me, ‘The floor has fallen out,’” Welker said during NBC’s election night coverage.

She said she pressed the source for details, asking, “Specifically, what states are you concerned about?”

The source responded that Republicans were “deeply concerned about what they’re seeing in Ohio and South Carolina, as well.”

In South Carolina, Democratic candidate Annie Andrews was leading Republican incumbent Sen. Darlene Graham 52.3% to 45.9%, with 53% of the vote counted, according to NBC News. The race remained too early to call.

Meanwhile, in Ohio, Democratic former Sen. Sherrod Brown held a nearly 12-point lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Jon Husted, with 54% of the vote compared to Husted’s 42.1%, according to early results. With roughly 42% of the expected vote counted, the race was rated “Lean Dem.”

Welker emphasized that South Carolina was particularly concerning for Republicans because it was a state they had expected to hold.

“The reason why that’s significant — because South Carolina was a state, and is a state, and we still have to wait to get more votes — that they had confidence in,” Welker explained.

“What they are seeing right now is making them really nervous,” she continued, calling the message “a significant admission by a top source.”
