Tony Romo released a public statement in the aftermath of his no contest plea to an OWI in Wisconsin court earlier this week. But if he’s expecting that his contrition redeemed himself in the eyes of his CBS employers, he might have to wait a while longer.

Taking to Instagram this week, Romo apologized for his actions and pledged to get help for his injury-induced issues with drinking and self-medicating. He asked for privacy in dealing with his issues.

“As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period,” Romo wrote.

CBS has certainly agreed to give him his privacy. They’re apparently giving him so much privacy that they’re not even responding to his message. Awful Announcing noted that CBS has yet to release any sort of statement on Romo despite requests for one.Romo has been on leave from CBS since his arrest. He was taken in on July 23, 2026, on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped Romo on Interstate 43 after observing alleged unsafe passing and lane deviations. Officers reported that Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before taking him into custody.Authorities also cited him for possessing an open container of alcohol in his vehicle and for unsafe passing on the right. Romo was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail and released later that evening. Under Wisconsin law, a first-offense OWI is generally handled as a civil offense rather than a criminal charge.

Body camera footage later released by authorities showed Romo cooperating with officers for much of the encounter, though reports indicated he refused a chemical intoxication test after his arrest.

In the aftermath, Romo withdrew from a scheduled golf tournament in Texas, and CBS Sports announced that he would take a leave of absence while the legal process unfolds.

Romo will be replaced by J.J. Watt in the announcer’s booth until further notice.
