Olivia Rodrigo surprises the Lollapalooza crowd in a 20-year-old Balenciaga minidress
First The Cure, now The Smashing Pumpkins: Olivia Rodrigo is back with another ’80s favorite. Making a surprise appearance at Lollapalooza (would it really be a music festival without a couple of special guests?), the you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love artist joined the Chicago-born rock band in their home city for an unexpected duet of “Thirty-Three.”

While the track was The Smashing Pumpkins’s final single off of their 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Rodrigo turned not to the ’90s but to the early aughts for her on-stage look. Pulling a semi-sheer lacy number from the Balenciaga archives, the singer stepped out in a top-turned-minidress designed by Nicolas Ghesquière for the Spring/Summer 2006 season. The piece featured structured cap sleeves, ruffle panels, and lace-up detailing, and she layered it over little white shorts.
To pair, the star added knee-high socks and platform Mary Jane pumps, and braided her hair into a halo crown, putting her own romantic-meets-rockstar spin on the 20-year-old piece.Over the years, Rodrigo has found herself sharing the stage with classic rock acts and rising pop stars alike, performing with Billy Joel, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette, Ed Sheeran, Addison Rae, and Noah Kahan. Most notably, she brought out The Cure’s Robert Smith during her 2025 Glastonbury Festival headlining set for renditions of “Just Like Heaven”—a song she later referenced in “drop dead”—and “Friday I’m in Love.” The moment foreshadowed their studio collaboration, “What’s Wrong With Me,” which they later surprised the Primavera Sound crowd with in June 2026.
