Elon Musk is ‘okay with being disliked’ — and he knows exactly where his $985 billion fortune is going

Elon Musk is the world’s richest person, currently worth nearly $1 trillion, a milestone he became the first to hit earlier this year. Musk is also the most followed person on social media platform X with more than 240 million followers.

Here’s what Musk wants his legacy to be and where his money should go after he passes.

Musk on Being Liked

In a new interview with author Walter Isaacson, Musk covers his thoughts on key topics like artificial intelligence and more. He also shares details about his personal life and ideals, similar to what Isaacson wrote in a biography of the billionaire several years ago.

“Sometimes I don’t like to be liked,” Musk said. “I’m okay with being disliked.”

Musk told Isaacson on “The Builders” podcast that wanting to be liked could be a bad quality for building a company, as things may not work out if you are doing things that diminish the success rate of the company in order to be liked.

While Musk recognizes that many people don’t like him, he highlights his large social media following and predicts that, among people who know who he is, 70% to 80% like him.

“Some people hate my guts.”

Musk’s Legacy

Musk has plenty of thoughts on how AI and robots could create universal income and wealth for everyone and make money obsolete. If that happens, his current $985 billion net worth could be changed.

“The future is going to be AI and robots,” Musk said.

He said currency won’t matter someday. “I don’t think money’s going to matter in the future.”

If money does matter and Musk remains the richest person, he said that his descendants will have a high tax bill and may be worth less than he is.

The billionaire said most of his net worth will go towards his foundation and help preserve his legacy. Asked what he hopes his legacy will be, Musk hit on three key ideals.

The billionaire wants his wealth to “continue the goals” of making life multi-planetary, extend consciousness to the stars and improve sustainability on Earth.
