Vice President JD Vance once again stood at the head of the White House’s James S. Brady briefing room, as the Trump administration has yet to name Karoline Leavitt’s replacement.

During the press briefing, Vance revealed that the president told him to “be careful” not to do too good a job, as the president might appoint the vice president as Leavitt’s replacement. “Are we addressing you as Vice President or Press Secretary?” asked Fox News’ Peter Doocy.

The comment forced a chuckle out of Vance, 42, who then compared himself to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “So I’m not Marco. I have not yet accepted any additional jobs, though I guess the Fraud Task Force co-chair is my second additional job,” he joked.

“It’s funny, before I came out here, I was talking with the president in the Oval Office, and he said, ‘Be careful. I want you to do well, but if you do too well, I might make you the press secretary,'” added Vance.

The idea of having Vance as the president’s press secretary, even as a joke, did not sit well with social media. “Jesus….now he’s a comedian!?” one person said, including a vomit emoji.

“Oh, that JD is so funny, isn’t he?!” another person added sarcastically. A third slammed the vice president for rambling on about sauerkraut.

Other comments seemed more favorable toward the vice president and his humor. “JD Vance bringing some humor to the briefing!” one person laughed.

“A little self-deprecation goes a long way,” they added. “Leadership can still have a sense of humor.”

Another person commented that they loved it when Rubio and Vance were picked to address the media. While Leavitt’s replacement has not been named, several contenders for the job have emerged.

Leavitt’s Legacy

While the White House has not officially filled the position, the president revealed that he is certainly not lacking in applicants. “I’ve never had so many job applications in my life,” he told reporters, adding that Leavitt made it look “glamorous.”

Names to fill the vacancy include CNN MAGA correspondent Scott Jennings, who allegedly met with Susie Wiles, Trump’s chief of staff, since the press secretary position opened up. However, Jennings has not confirmed anything.

“Karoline Leavitt has been maybe the greatest White House press secretary in the last 30 years, at least,” he told CNN’s NewsNight. “She’s been nothing short of brilliant.”

“I don’t know a single Republican in the country who isn’t in awe of and in appreciation of Karoline tonight,” he added. “So, godspeed on your journey back to your family. You’ve done great stuff.”Sources within the White House told CBS that, as with Leavitt’s 11-week maternity leave, top officials in the Trump administration will take turns holding the briefings. In addition to Jennings, sources told the New York Post that Alina Habba, the president’s former defense attorney, is also being eyed as a possible replacement.

During the president’s New York Civil lawsuit in 2024, Habba essentially served as press secretary. Other names being floated included deputy press secretary Anna Kelly, who served as a national press secretary for the Republican National Committee. Kari Lake and Katie Miller, the wife of Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, have also been floated, but are considered long shots.

Sources also alleged that White House Communications Director Steven Cheung and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Taylor Budowich are also being considered. Matthew Boyle, the Washington bureau chief for right-wing news site Breitbart, was also named as a potential candidate.
