A U.S. high school football star has died at 17 years old after suffering a serious injury during his team’s first game of the season.

Adam Massman, a senior quarterback for Alma Center Lincoln in Wisconsin, suffered a life-threatening injury during Thursday night’s season opener. He was injured during the game and received medical care from emergency personnel on the field before being taken to the hospital. On Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin school district learned that he had passed away.

“This loss touches our Lincoln family in many ways,” Superintendent Drew Semingson said to reporters.

Massman had a big 2025 season and was primed for a huge 2026 year. As a junior, he threw for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns in six games, while rushing for another 280 yards and three touchdowns, according to MaxPreps statistics.Massman was also a standout boys basketball player. He made the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s 2025 Boys Basketball Academic All-State list.
