Bernard JR Fleander, 26, was potty training the young girl while babysitting her when the alleged incident occurred. He has since been charged with first-degree murder, according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

According to local CBS affiliate WAFB, the 3-year-old sustained severe head trauma as well as extensive internal injuries. The sheriff’s office confirmed to the outlet that the injuries were sustained while Fleander was potty training the victim.

Although police have withheld the girl’s identity, they established that Fleander had been acting as her caregiver, despite not being her biological father.

Fleander was also responsible for supervising additional children at his residence located in the 6700 block of Highway 308 in Belle Rose, situated 45 miles south of Baton Rouge.Upon learning of the suspected crime, law enforcement officers promptly carried out a search warrant at the property, during which they questioned several individuals present at the home. The girl’s tragic death has been ruled a homicide following an autopsy performed by a medical examiner, and authorities are coordinating with the district attorney’s office and the Department of Children and Family Services.

While the investigation continues, authorities do not expect further arrests in connection with the crime. At this time, no additional information regarding the case has been made public.

The suspect is currently being detained without bond at the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on charges of first-degree murder. He is also facing a charge of failure to appear related to a battery charge.
