Mayor sparks fury after saying ‘We’ll just have to suck it up and go on’ after a cop was murdered

A Texas mayor drew massive backlash for making ‘tasteless’ comments about a cop dying on duty and a family killed in a horrific fire.

Canton Mayor Lou Ann Berry was speaking about two recent tragedies that took place in the city during a KYTX livestream when she made the curious comments.

Van Zandt County deputy, Adam Sherifi, died on October 20 while serving a warrant. Also, a horrific fire killed three children and a mother inside their home.

The mayor spoke about the grave loss and said she was teary when she heard the news that morning.

She went on to say that the community was in shock and that it was ‘a tragedy for everybody.’

She also expressed sympathy for the family of the man who fatally shot the officer.

‘His family is going to be wondering what happened to him,’ she said.

The mayor then smiled and added: ‘We will just have to suck it up and go on.’

Her comment did not sit well with people who watched the interview online.

Many commenters asked for her resignation on social media while some said they did not understand why she appeared to be laughing.

‘Suck it up and go on?????? who says that after indicating children died in a fire and two officers were hurt and one died? Who says that!?’ a user wrote.

Another said: ‘What a bizarre woman. She laughs at the criminal’s actions, despite how it ended. She doesn’t know that the sheriff deputy had children and a wife.’

‘She doesn’t know the grandfather of the children that died in the house fire also works for the same sheriff department.’

‘Suck it up?? Ma’am it is okay to have a written statement, so that you don’t say such tasteless things.’

‘You need to RESIGN!!’ another social media user wrote.

The mayor’s problem did not end there. People watching the live noticed something odd about the address.

After her interview, the mayor moved away from the camera and asked a person if they wanted some ‘gossip.’

The clip circulated online, drawing more backlash for the mayor.

A user said: ‘I’m appalled by what I heard. To gossip about situations like this in a way is incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful, especially coming from someone in a leadership position who is supposed to care about this community.

A version of the interview that appeared on YouTube did not include this moment.
