A family’s summer fun took an unexpected turn after they made a disturbing discovery in their backyard pool, prompting a call to police and sparking a heated debate online.

The homeowner shared the story on Reddit after finding what they believed could pose a risk to both their young child and family pet. Unsure whether their reaction was justified, they turned to the internet for a second opinion.

The post was shared on Monday by Reddit user u/dogandfroglover in the popular “Am I Overreacting?” forum, where people seek feedback on difficult situations. It quickly gained attention, receiving more than 3,900 upvotes and 976 comments.

According to the poster, the incident began when their husband saw a neighbor’s child, believed to be between 7 and 9 years old, using a trampoline to climb a fence before tossing something into the family’s above-ground pool.

At the time, the family assumed the object was harmless. But when the homeowner drained the pool the following day, they discovered something far more alarming.

“I drained the pool yesterday to find a big piece of broken glass,” they said.

The find immediately raised concerns about what else might be lurking in and around the pool. The homeowner said they had read that tiny glass particles could become embedded in the liner, make their way into the filter and even get trapped in foam pool toys.

While they acknowledged they weren’t sure how accurate that information was, they said they were unwilling to take the chance.

“I think the neighbor should reimburse us for the pool, having it hauled away, and the foam toys. Total is $250.”

The Redditor explained that the situation felt especially serious because they have a dog and a 3-year-old child. They said they now felt compelled to thoroughly inspect the yard to make sure no additional pieces of glass had ended up elsewhere on the property.

The incident was also not the first problem they had experienced involving the child, according to the post.

“This is also not the first time he has thrown something into our yard and then tried to climb inside our privacy fence to retrieve it,” the user wrote.

Concerned enough to involve authorities, the homeowner filed a police report. However, the response they received left them questioning their actions.

“I just made a police report. The officer told me I was overreacting,” they said.

After hearing that assessment, the Redditor turned to the platform’s users for guidance.

“Now I am questioning if I am overreacting or not?” they asked.

The post quickly drew hundreds of responses, with commenters debating whether the homeowner’s concerns about the broken glass were justified and whether asking the neighbor to cover the costs was a reasonable request.
