In a now-deleted post on X, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton referred to a Houston-area community using the name of a Mediterranean island nation, sparking backlash from both his opponent in the U.S. Senate race and other Texans.

“Thank you for joining me in Lubbock today! This campaign continues to grow every day,” Paxton posted to X on Saturday night after a stop at the Rock City Event Center. “Next stop: Cyprus with the great @TedCruz. We will keep Texas, Texas.”

It appears Paxton-the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Texas-was referring to his next campaign event in Cypress, the community about 25 miles northwest of downtown Houston he’s scheduled to visit Monday. Cyprus is an island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea about 60 miles from the southern coast of Turkey.

Commenters immediately flooded the post’s replies, criticizing the confusion. That included a response by Democratic State Rep. James Talarico.”It’s Cypress, not ‘Cyprus,'” Talarico posted Sunday. “But for all the time you spend on luxury vacations in Europe, it’s no surprise you don’t know Texas.

In response to Talarico’s reply, some commenters defended Paxton, calling the mistake a simple typo. Others criticized his office for deleting the post and the mix-up itself. Paxton’s office and campaign did not immediately respond to Chron’s request for comment. The original post was removed around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The incident comes amid a contentious campaign marked by attack ads and public clashes between the two candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Paxton is scheduled to host a campaign event with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz at around 2:30 p.m. Monday at Glorious Way Church in Cypress. Talarico is scheduled to appear Thursday at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.
