A one-year prison sentence had just been handed down at the Columbiana County Courthouse in Lisbon, Ohio, when Timothy J. Reaggle made a sudden and violent attempt to avoid serving it.

Surveillance footage released by the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and shared by outlets including WFMJ, Fox News, and The Salem News captures the entire chaotic sequence. The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, September 14, following Reaggle’s sentencing before Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam.

Reaggle, 20, of Wellsville, had been placed in front handcuffs and was being escorted from the courtroom by security bailiff Keith Thorn. According to The Salem News, Reaggle had been crying as he left the courtroom.

Then, in the second-floor hallway, the restraints suddenly failed.

Reaggle broke free, spun around, and struck Thorn in the throat or face area, sending the bailiff crashing to the floor. Rather than stopping there, he immediately sprinted down the hallway and slammed into another security bailiff, Steve Boyd, knocking him down as well.

The video shows the situation transforming from a prisoner escort into a full courthouse pursuit within seconds.

A Wild Dash Down the Stairwell

Reaggle continued past the elevator and into the stairwell, with Deputy Sheriff Nick Rusyn pursuing him.

At the bottom of the stairs, the escape attempt became a physical struggle involving additional law enforcement personnel. Deputy Coltan Vollnogle and Detective Jesse Smith, director of the Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force, confronted Reaggle.

For a moment, it looked like the chase was over.

It wasn’t.

According to Vollnogle, Reaggle broke free from the officers again and continued toward the courthouse’s first-floor security area. The original handcuffs were visibly broken by this point.

Rusyn ultimately deployed a Taser near the security station and metal detector. Reaggle was stopped just short of the exterior doors and wrestled to the ground before deputies secured him in handcuffs again and transported him back to the Columbiana County Jail.

Now, the prisoner just doubled his problems.

Both Thorn and Boyd suffered broken bones and were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to Sheriff Brian McLaughlin. Thorn suffered injuries to his head and face and was shown afterward bleeding and holding a paper towel against his injuries. Both deputies were released from the hospital, but neither returned to work the following day.

A bystander who was at the courthouse for an unrelated matter also helped the injured bailiff after the attack.

The Prison Sentence That Came Before the Escape

Reaggle’s courthouse ordeal began with a case dating back to February 14, 2025.

According to local reporting, that incident involved an alleged confrontation at a residence in St. Clair Township. Court records described allegations that Reaggle headbutted a woman after she told him to leave, tackled and assaulted a man outside the residence, and held a knife to another man’s neck while threatening him. He also fled from police.

The original case involved charges including aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, aggravated menacing, failure to comply with a police officer’s order or signal, and two misdemeanor assault counts. Reaggle pleaded guilty to reduced charges in July.

Judge Washam ultimately sentenced him to one year in prison.

Instead of heading from the courthouse to begin that sentence, Reaggle launched a violent escape attempt that could now add substantially more legal trouble.

Sheriff McLaughlin said potential charges include felony escape, two counts of felony assault against police officers, and resisting arrest. Captain Ryan Pike later confirmed that the new charges will proceed through the grand jury rather than being filed immediately.

For now, Reaggle remains in county custody. He is expected to be transferred to state prison to serve the original one-year sentence once the new case is resolved.
