(KRON) — Detectives are searching for a 14-year-old girl who is accused of giving birth on the side of a rural Monterey County road, abandoning her daughter, and leaving the infant to die. The deceased newborn’s teen mother is currently at-large and wanted on suspicion of murder, sheriff’s officials said.

Investigators named the newborn, “Baby Angelita,” which means “Baby Angel” in Spanish, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. The tiny victim was found dead along Struve Road in Moss Landing on August 1.

Sergio Galvez Perez, a 38-year-old man who lives in the Salinas and Castroville area, is wanted on suspicion of incest and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. Sheriff’s officials said they believe Perez is now hiding the 14-year-old girl.

“Detectives have determined that Sergio Galvez Perez is currently concealing the 14-year-old juvenile and preventing law enforcement from locating her,” the sheriff’s office wrote Monday.

Over the past four weeks, detectives have been investigating circumstances surrounding Baby Angelita’s death.

“Detectives developed evidence indicating that a juvenile female gave birth to Baby Angelita along the side of the road and placed her on the ground before leaving the area. A post mortem forensic examination conducted on Baby Angelita indicated she had signs of traumatic injury,” MCSO wrote.

Officials said Flock automated license plate reader cameras helped crack the case open by recording the suspects’ car: a beige 2010 Mercury Milan four-door sedan.

“Information obtained through the (Flock) system played a critical role in helping detectives identify and track a vehicle of interest associated with the murder investigation. Within 53 hours, investigators combined information obtained through Flock with traditional investigative techniques to develop additional leads, identify individuals associated with the vehicle of interest, and locate persons connected to the murder investigation,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

Detectives identified three suspects tied to the Baby Angelita murder investigation. They all live in the Salinas and Castroville area:

Ortega was booked into the Monterey County Jail, however, she quickly posted bail and was released from custody, the sheriff’s office said.

Perez and the girl remained at-large Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Tina Nieto said, “We cannot lose sight of Baby Angelita, an innocent child whose life was tragically lost. We remain committed to seeking justice on her behalf.”

Anyone who sees Perez is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately by dialing 911. “Do not approach or attempt to confront him,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
